A natural swimming pool is two artificially lined and linked pools - one for swimming in, the other for naturally filtering the water with plants and special minerals. The crystal clear water is clean enough to swim in.
Every natural swimming pool is unique. The construction method and appearance of a natural swimming pool can vary considerably, according to the setting and client requirements. For example, they can be like a conventional pool, a rocky river pool with beach edges or a classical ornamental garden pond.
Designed and sited professionally within an overall garden plan, they are a wonderful natural water feature, with the benefit of chemical-free swimming and considerable wildlife value.
How does it work?
A filter pool biologically breaks down harmful bacteria. Water is drawn through the plant roots and special mineral layers, which keep the water clear, ecologically balanced and free of algal build-up. In brief:
• Mechanically filtered using a skimmer filter and our professional Proficlear system • Biologically filtered by natural means and plants using a pumped system • Separate planted areas and swimming areas • Heating can be improved by doubling the size of plant filter pond • Minimum size is 25'x25' (a small dip pool) • Half area is for swimming • There is no upper limit for size
Can it be heated?
Yes. The shallow filter pool, which is at least 50% of the swimming pool area, acts as a giant solar panel. This area can be enlarged to provide increased heating. Additional, indirect heating (like a domestic hot water system) can be added using an electrical heat exchanger.
Is the water safe to swim in?
Yes, providing the pool is correctly operated and maintained. Harmful bacteria are broken down & risk of disease and infection is very low. The pool is completely free of chlorine (toxic to living things including humans) and other harmful chemicals.
How are they maintained?
During the first year close monitoring and maintenance is vital. This is when the pool is stabilizing and most likely to need professional care. The pools need weeding, vacuuming, netting (if surrounded by trees) and steps for overwintering.
Generally maintenance is much less than a conventional pool, and more rewarding as plant growth and appearance is improved. Ducks and fish are not permitted for hygiene reasons.
